“Hope does not disappoint us”
    - Romans 5:5

With unwavering faith in God’s providence, Most Rev. Bishop John Aelen, the Archbishop of Madras, established the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph on February 13, 1883, under the patronage of St. Joseph, in Vepery, Chennai – 600 016. The Congregation was founded with the sole purpose of uplifting marginalized, downtrodden, and oppressed women and girls.

What began with just three members in 1887 has since grown to 520, spreading the light of knowledge, healing, reconciliation, care, and empowerment to people of all backgrounds, particularly women and children, regardless of caste, creed, or color. The guiding spirit of the Lord has worked wonders over the years, leaving an indelible legacy. On April 7, 1998, the Congregation attained its Pontifical status.

The story of the FSJ Sisters in Chennai, starting with only three members, now flourishes as a beacon of service and love. In today’s world, communication plays a vital role in staying connected globally, and a website offers an invaluable platform for sharing our mission. I am pleased to welcome you to the website of the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph Congregation. Here, you will find essential information about our events, mission, and ongoing work. I invite you to join us in spreading God’s love, peace, and joy across the world.
