We, the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph, an indigenous congregation of women religious , founded by the Most Rev. Bishop John Aelen, the Archbishop of Madras on 13th February, 1883 under the patronage of St. Joseph at Vepery Chennai – 600 112.

B ishop John Aelen, our Founder, was a daring visionary who had the inner courage to “Proclaim the Year of the Lord’s Favour” to

all those who were pushed to the periphery of the hierarchically-structured society.

He emphasized and gave us our primary goal and charism, the ardent desire to strive towards liberation in solidarity with the downtrodden and

the oppressed with a special emphasis on women and integral growth of female children

We promote justice, peace, and the well-being of all people, especially the poor and marginalized

Legal Commission

We assist in resolving disputes and educating marginalized women about their rights & responsibilities

Project Commission

We ensure that all projects align with the Church’s pastoral priorities and serve the needs of the communities efficiently

Finance Commission

We prepare budgets, oversees income and expenditure, ensures proper accounting practices & plans for long-term financial sustainability

With unwavering faith in God’s providence, Most Rev. Bishop John Aelen, the Archbishop of Madras, established the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph on February 13, 1883, under the patronage of St. Joseph, in Vepery, Chennai – 600 016. The Congregation was founded with the sole purpose of uplifting marginalized, downtrodden, and oppressed women and girls. What began with just three members in 1887 has since ……..
