On 19th March the Congregation ofthe Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph was established.

Referred as the branch of the congregation of St. Louis de Gonzague
1895 – 1962
The name of the congregation as the ‘Third order Regular ofSt. Francis of Assisi was given by the Most Rev. Joseph Colgan.
1934
Sixty members of the Congregation celebrated the 50th year of the establishment on 11th February
1962
Archbishop Louis Mathias, Sdb, renamed the congregation as “The Franciscan Sisters of St.Joseph”.
1987
The Centenary Year was celebrated on 19th December with the theme: “Towards Perfect Love in Simplicity”, which highlighted the option for the poor.
1992
Mother Mary Venantia, the, then Assistant Superior General, wrote a book on the History of our Congregation both in English ‘The Quest ‘ and in Tamil (Ootrai thedum neerodai).
1998
7th April is a Red Letter Day in the history of our congregation. It was on that day our congregation acquired the status of a Religious Congregation of the Pontifical Right.
2004
On 3rd January, the 75th year of our founder Archbishop John Alen attaining heavenly bliss was celebrated with gratitude with the theme: “A blazing Trail”.
2007
On 11th February, the New Constitution and Regulation Text came into effect on our Founder’s day.
2008
25th to 28th August was marked by persecution and tainted with blood. The outbreak of the Kandamal Violence in Odisha proved to be a struggle for life and death for the FSJ.
2011
The Quasquicentennial Celebration was inaugurated with a Solemn Eucharistic Celebration on 19th March.
2011
The Memorial Mass was celebrated with a sense of gratitude for all our ancestors who have departed from the FSJ family on 20th November.
2012
On 4th March, the Quasquicentennial Celebration was celebrated to commemorate the 125th year of the establishment of our congregation with the motto ‘A Blazing Hope’.
2017
The FSJ family celebrated the 100th birthday of Sr. Mary Barbara on 4th February in a more meaningful manner.
2018
St. Joseph’s College Arts and Science for women, Singampunari, Sivagangai District, was opened and blessed bythe Most Rev. Dr. Jude Gerald Paulraj , Bishop of Palayamkottai on April 21st.
2018
Installation of a new Convent at Roncello , Diocese of Milan , Italy.
2019
A solemn memorial mass for the 164 departed sisters of the congregation was celebrated at st. Francis of Assisi Chapel,St. Louis Convent by Rev. Fr. S. J. Anthonysamy, Former Vicar Forane, Diocese of Madras - Mylapore
2020
The FSJ Family recognised its precious history by celebrating the 90th founder’s Anniversary on 11th January.
2021
2021 Installation of a community at Naraini , Diocese of Jhansi on 19th July and Installation of another community at Thakurdwara, Diocese of Meerut on 23rd July.

About Us

The Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph was founded by Fr. John Aelen , a Mill Hill Missionary who later became the Archbishop of Madras. He established the Congregation in the year 1887 with a team of three members.
